Advanced treatments, advanced care—close to home

MAVI is leading the way in vascular innovation

At Midwest Aortic & Vascular Institute (MAVI), our mission is simple: provide the most advanced vascular care available—right here in Kansas City. That means staying at the forefront of new technologies and techniques, offering patients treatment options that are less invasive, more effective, and focused on getting them back to life sooner.

Recently, our surgeons achieved two major milestones that highlight this commitment: performing the first Cook Medical Zenith Iliac Branch Device (ZBIS) procedure in the state of Missouri and the first TAMBE (Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis) procedure at North Kansas City Hospital. Both represent cutting-edge solutions for complex aneurysms, and both were performed by our dedicated MAVI team.

First in Missouri: the Cook Medical Zenith Iliac Branch Device (ZBIS)

Aortoiliac and iliac aneurysms are bulges in the arteries near the lower aorta that can put patients at risk of rupture or reduced blood flow. Traditional repairs can sometimes compromise blood flow to the internal iliac artery—an artery that plays a critical role in pelvic circulation.

The Zenith Iliac Branch Device (ZBIS) offers a groundbreaking solution. Its branched design allows surgeons to repair the aneurysm while preserving blood flow to the internal iliac artery, helping to reduce the risk of complications like pelvic ischemia.

Benefits for patients include:

  • Minimally invasive endovascular repair
  • Preserves vital blood flow to important arteries
  • Expands treatment options for complex iliac aneurysms

MAVI is proud to be the first in Missouri to perform a procedure with this device, led by Dr. Deiparine. Most importantly, the patient is doing great—an encouraging sign of the impact advanced technology can make.

First at North Kansas City Hospital: TAMBE procedure

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA) are among the most complex and dangerous aneurysms, stretching from the chest into the abdomen and affecting arteries that supply blood to the kidneys and other vital organs. Traditionally, repairing these aneurysms required open surgery with significant risks and long recovery times.

The Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE) procedure offers a minimally invasive alternative. Using small incisions in the groin, surgeons guide a custom-made stent graft with multiple branches into place. These branches are designed to align with the patient’s arteries, maintaining blood flow while bypassing the aneurysm.

 Benefits for patients include:

  • Less invasive than open surgery
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Shorter hospital stays and faster recovery
  • A life-saving option for patients not eligible for open surgery

Performed by Dr. Lau and Dr. Deiparine, this was the first TAMBE procedure at North Kansas City Hospital—a milestone that brings one of the most advanced aneurysm treatments to our local community.

Innovation close to home

Being first in the state and first at North Kansas City Hospital is more than just a milestone—it’s proof of our dedication to delivering the best vascular care possible, right here where our patients live. These achievements show how advanced procedures aren’t only available at large academic centers far away; they’re happening here in Kansas City, led by surgeons who are committed to advancing care for our community.

At MAVI, we’ll continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible—bringing life-saving, minimally invasive options to patients when they need them most.
