Explore Our Innovative Treatments

The experts at Midwest Aortic and Vascular Institute can help determine the cause of your symptoms and the best treatment option for your varicose veins. We are skilled in minimally invasive, state-of-the-art techniques for the treatment of varicose and spider veins. Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

Our Endovascular Suite offers a range of vascular services, including:

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RF) uses a thin catheter with electrodes to gently heat and close off a vein in the leg.
  • Venaseal Ablation gently closes off veins using a special glue delivered through a small catheter, requiring only a tiny puncture.
  • Microphlebectomy is the removal of medium to large varicose veins through tiny incisions, less than 1/4 inch, ensuring a cosmetically appealing result.
  • Injection sclerotherapy treats varicose veins by injecting a safe chemical that helps close them, allowing blood to flow through healthier veins. The treated veins naturally dissolve into the body over time.

Understanding Varicose and Spider Veins:
Symptoms and Significance

Health Implications of Varicose and Spider Veins

Although often viewed as a cosmetic issue, both varicose and spider veins can lead to more serious health complications if untreated. These include chronic pain, swelling, blood clots, and in severe cases, ulcers or bleeding. Beyond the physical symptoms, these vein issues can also cause significant discomfort and self-consciousness about one’s appearance.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large, twisted veins that often appear swollen and bulging on the legs and feet. This condition occurs when the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow weaken. Instead of moving smoothly to the heart, the blood can flow backward and pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become varicose. Common symptoms include aching pain, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, and swelling.

Spider Veins

While similar to varicose veins, spider veins are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They can appear red, purple, or blue and look like thin spider webs or branches. These veins are typically a cosmetic concern, but can also cause discomfort in some cases.
